Demo Description

Mindful Lettering

Have you ever taken a step back from your lettering and thought why? Why does this letter look different than that one? Why does this style feel more playful, but this one feels more whimsical? It's not about perfectionism, or about comparing yourself to others. It's about dissecting the why, to then be able to know the "how" and adapt that to your own letters. In this demonstration, Nicole will help you navigate and dissect your own lettering and use her different lessons to help you manipulate your own letters and style. No matter what tool you use, you can apply these bigger picture thoughts to your own craft.

Todd Jameson

Location

Lomita | California

Bio

Todd Jameson is currently gainfully-employed as an Manufacturing Analyst III, but the written word, ink, and letterforms have forever been his truest fascination. Time and circumstance have graced him with a bridge between the worlds of the analogue and digital. Education afforded equanimity. After over 40 years of serious practice in lettering, he still never quite knows what will emerge from the pen, especially if one allow for the opportunities of surprise. Or have no foreknowledge of what is to be written. Actually, 52 years if you count a disastrous introduction to Palmer cursive writing in the 2nd grade...

He has both studied and taught nationally and internationally, worked a steady 40 hour week as an aerospace artist for almost 35 years, and has worked freelance for NBC, the NFL, Mercedes Benz, Hallmark and PBS. He drop those names because everybody deserves a little bling. Now he works mostly for his own amusement.

Demo Description

Broad Edge Calligraphy

The Broad-edged pen may be many different creatures. From turkey quills through ground steel to foam brushes and wooden dental care products, the implement chosen produces calligraphic marks of different temperament and character. Todd will demonstrate and offer some stand-up insight/comedy based on decades of experience in a real-time demo highlighting the historical library of letterforms, with a little bit of the past and the future in an exercise blending Creative Writing and Traditional and Experimental calligraphy. Whatever becomes of the demo piece will be awarded as a door-prize after the event to attendees.

Sharisse DeLeon

Location

Sacramento, California

Bio

Hi, I’m Sharisse DeLeon of Pieces Calligraphy and my mission is to help others confidently create beautiful writing they can be proud of! While I’ve always been drawn to handlettering, I officially began my calligraphy journey in the fall of 2014. Once I realized calligraphy could be done with a brush marker, similar to the traditional pointed pen, I was excited to push my creativity and explore this new tool.

When I’m not working my day job or chasing my three little ones at home, you can find me teaching in-person workshops and online classes, as well as sharing calligraphy-related material, demos, and tutorials on my Instagram and YouTube channel. Meeting new calligraphy friends in person are one of my most favorite things, aside from my husband, boba & coffee, and playing volleyball.

Demo Description

Brush Pen Calligraphy

Learn how to create calligraphy with a brush marker pen. One of my favorite discoveries during my calligraphy journey is understanding how the brush pen works. It was game-changing when I realized I could manipulate the pen to create those ever desired thin and thick strokes that give calligraphy its signature look. I will demonstrate how to write letters, words, and sentences, plus answer some of your biggest questions about using the brush pen. Left-handed struggles, frayed pens, difficulty controlling pressure… let’s tackle as much as we can!
