DIY Custom Cake Plates

I have seen this DIY floating around pinterest, but it just seemed way too easy to be true. I had to test it out for myself. And it turns out that this sharpie/ceramic plate or mug DIY is just as simple as it sounds.

I decided to create a cake plate set for a reception, but the possibilities are endless. If you are ambitious this could be used on mugs as custom wedding favors for guests. Or use them as custom place cards with your guests’ names right on the plate at a dinner party. I picked up these plates at the 99¢ Store, so this project cost me a little over 3 dollars, total as I already had the other supplies on hand.

I tried a few methods of transferring a design onto the plate, but none seemed to work. Sketching out your design lightly with a pencil is the best way to get a rough draft before committing to the sharpie.

After baking the plates hold up really well to wear. You will want to hand wash them instead of running them through the dishwasher, but overall they look great!
