Lace Paper Mache Balloon

This is one of the cutest DIY’s we have put together. It’s easy and so rewarding. Give yourself at least two days to finish the project. You will need to let the balloon sit overnight to dry. Don’t let it sit out in the sun, or it might pop!

Materials for paste
• 1 cup of water
• a couple tablespoons of water

Steps for making paste
Step 1: Mix 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of flour.
Step 2: Stir and microwave for 15 seconds.
Step 3: Continue to add 2 tablespoons of flour to the water and microwave for 15 seconds each time until you have a thick paste.
Now onto the Balloon!!

Materials for balloon
• lace fabric
• butcher paper
• brushes & scissors
• balloon
• paste

Steps for making balloon
Step 1: Inflate your balloon
Step 2: Tear up pieces of butcher paper. We used butcher paper to make sure the lace would be reinforced.
Step 3: Start to paper mache! Add some paste to the balloon before putting the paper down.
Step 4: Continue until your balloon is all completely covered with butcher paper then start with the lace.
Step 5: Cut a small round piece to fit the top of the balloon.
Step 6: Cut long strips to wrap around the balloon.
Step 7: Add the round piece to the top of the balloon and the strips around the balloon.
Step 8: You’ll find that the strips will pucker as you wrap them around the balloon. Let the lace pucker so that it forms a pleat then just snip that off. Once you snip the excess off you will be left with what looks like a small cut in the fabric. You can just add some paste to blend the lace together.
Step 9: Once you have added all of the lace, add one more layer of paste.
Step 10: All done! Now just let it sit overnight to dry. Once it has fully dried, pop the balloon!

Materials for assembly
• dry balloon
• scissors
• twine
• base (we used a small pail from a local craft store)
• dowels

Steps for assembling the balloon
Step 1: We cut our dowels down to 18″ and wrapped them in twine.
Step 2: Decide where you are going to place your dowels. Add a thick line of glue inside your base.
Step 3: Place the dowel and hold down until secure.
Step 4: Continue with the next 2 dowels.
Step 5: Admire your dowels!
Step 6: Place the balloon on the dowels.
Step 7: Add glue to the dowel.
Step 8: Place your hand inside the balloon and press against the dowel to secure in place. Continue with the next 2 dowels and you’re done!!!!

We used our hot air balloon along with our really cute “advice for the bride and groom” gold foil stamped cards. You can place the hot air balloon next to your guest book. Just think about reading all of these cards the morning after your wedding or even on your 1 year anniversary. Isn’t that gold foil so cute?!
