OCTOBER 12TH: French Roundhand with David Grimes
French Roundhand: A Modern Perspective with David Grimes
October 12th • 9am - 12pm
All skill levels are welcome!
French Roundhand is the name given to a beautiful American adaptation of a French calligraphic style from the 1600s known simply as 'Ronde'. The letters are crafted with a series of simple and elegant strokes of the broad pen to produce a highly legible text that regulates its own spacing, creates an even texture of work across a page, and sparks nostalgic and romantic sentiment in anyone to view it.
In this class, you will learn the basics of broad pen writing, the foundational shapes of minuscule letters in the French Roundhand Style, and a bit of history regarding the American penmen and their use of this beautiful and charismatic type of lettering. Your handouts will include a minuscule and majuscule exemplar, several small project templates, and a list of resources to learn more about French Roundhand as well as the styles that influenced it from hundreds of years prior.
This workshop includes all supplies and admission to CalligraFair for both days.
David is a calligrapher and teacher working in Portland, Oregon.
Workshops take place at Smitten on Paper's studio
