If you’re interested in learning calligraphy, thinking of starting your own business, or just like to try something new – this class is for you. This class is truly meant for beginners – if you’ve never picked up a calligraphy pen before, you’ll want to take this class! Lauren will go over the basics, including dipping your pen in ink, understanding ink flow and pressure, basic script letter forms, and developing your own lettering style.
Plus, there will be brunchy treats and refreshments! (think donuts and mimosas)
For this workshop, students are required to be familiar with the pointed pen. Students must know how to create shaded (thick) strokes and hairline (thin) strokes, and transition from thick to thin and vice versa.
Here’s what they will be covering in class:
– a review of the fundamental concepts of Copperplate script (proportions, slant, shades, ovals, etc.)
– the basic strokes of the uppercase letters and drill exercises
The objective of this class is for students to have a confident grasp of the basic tools and the necessary skills they need to continue their lowercase practice at home. This class is for students who want to learn the fundamentals of lowercase Copperplate script.
The class will cover:
key concepts of Copperplate script
structure & techniques
the entire lowercase alphabet
No prior calligraphy experience is required for this class. This is a great class for beginners and seasoned calligraphers who are looking to refine their Copperplate script.
*All supplies will be provided, however students are more than welcome to bring their own nibs and penholders.
In this 3.5 hour workshop, you’ll learn and practice all the brush calligraphy basics: How to choose and hold the brush pen, how to connect each stroke deliberately and carefully, and how to use a “critical eye” when evaluating your work.
In this class, Nina and Grace of Calligraphy Companion will be showing you how to address and flourish envelopes and write placecards just in time for the holidays! You will learn how to line envelopes and use a lightpad, mix gouache, and draw decorative flourishes around your envelope and placecards.
Each student will receive a kit with a couple of envelopes, a set of placecards, and a sample of some of our favorite inks.No prior experience needed.
You will need a penholder (oblique and/or straight) and nibs for this class.
This class is for students who want to improve their Copperplate script and trouble shoot common issues.
In this intensive bootcamp, Calligraphy Companion will focus mainly on the details of Copperplate script (e.g. slant, oval forms, letter proportions and ratios, shades, hairlines, etc.) and the methods for achieving uniformity in those facets. Technical aspects of practice such as pen and paper angles, pen grip, tine movement, squaring tops and bottoms of stems, etc. will also be discussed in this class.
Each student will have one-on-one time with the instructors that is catered to his or her needs.
REQUIREMENTS: To get the most out of this bootcamp, they recommend that students have some knowledge and experience with Copperplate script, such as basic letter structures of both uppercase and lowercase.
In this 3-hour class, you will learn how to gain confidence with the brush, how to create a brush-lettering style and the steps to take a piece from concept to finalized piece. Nicole demonstrates how to transition to combining the letters into words, how to create/define your own style and how to blend colors to create an ombre look.
With the small class environment and Nicole’s teaching style, each student will receive one-on-one attention and individual help.
All supplies in a custom wooden box: 36 color watercolor palette, pad of paper that Nicole has found is best for scanning/creating work, 2 brushes, jar of white and gold ink and the booklet of information with Nicole’s lettering style and lesson plan.

We are thrilled to be hosting a workshop at our Monrovia, CA studio with Bmas, a collaboration between two amazingly talented calligraphy artists, Joi of Bien Fait and David of Masgrimes. This full day workshop will be a great opportunity to learn the Foundations of Script Writing from two lettering masters who rarely make their way to California!
Registration opens Friday, February 19th at 8am PST. There is limited seating available, so don’t delay!
In this workshop, beginner to advanced students learn to critique their calligraphy by discussing ideals and principals for the perfect geometric forms used by writing masters from the Golden Age of Penmanship. Whether you choose to pursue classical or modern freestyle calligraphy, an understanding of the fundamentals of letterforms will enhance your skill set and improve your writing ability.
This class is co-taught by Joi and David so that means one-on-one time with each instructor. This means you will be receiving help on aspects specific to YOUR practice, grip, posture, and any other challenges. This one-on-one time is a core aspect of our teaching philosophy.
A kit with required materials for this class will be provided for you. Please indicate if you are right or left handed. Please also feel free to bring any tools and supplies that you may already own (We want you to be comfortable!)
Some words from past attendees:
“Joi and David’s workshop was the perfect experience. They broke down the strokes of engrosser’s script down to the very basics and in great detail explained the why and the how. It didn’t matter if you had experience in calligraphy or none at all, they broke it down in a way that was enlightening for all students. Also, they made sure to come talk to every single person in the class with every new piece of instruction to make sure you had the opportunity to ask questions specific to your own work. Joi and David were personally invested in every single person in the room, and that made all the difference in the world.”
– Meg Bosse
“David and Joi are both incredibly talented calligraphers and extremely knowledgable (even on techniques that are not typical to them). I am left-handed and they both showed me hands on techniques, how to not only get comfortable with holding the straight pen, adjusting my angles, but also demonstrating specific letters and combinations I struggle with. They both moved effortlessly around the room interacting with everyone and demonstrating on a chalkboard, and on everyone’s paper. “
